The Department of Family Medicine is dedicated to advocating the ideals of family medicine, advancing the knowledge base of primary care, and serving communities and families throughout the state of Michigan. The department in East Lansing includes 18 board-certified family physicians, a thriving research unit, educational specialists, and a creative and talented administrative group.
Its network of nine affiliated family practice residency programs encompasses programs in Flint, Grand Blanc, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Marquette, Midland, Saginaw, and Traverse City, with a total of almost 100 faculty members.
The College of Human Medicine offers an Integrated Medical School and Family Medicine Residency Program “TIP” a transitional fourth year medical school experience that continues into residency. The program is available in four college campus communities: Grand Rapids, Lansing, Midland and Traverse City.
An impressive number of MSU College of Human Medicine graduates choose careers in family practice. In 2002, the college earned a Gold Achievement Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians for its outstanding efforts in developing student interest in family practice and producing graduates who enter the specialty. In 2003, the college earned the Silver Achievement Award.
